Writing a letter
When you have said all that you wanted to tell your correspondent, your letter is finished.
If you want to write a letter, you must have the necessary writing materials, that is, a sheet of note-paper, a pen and inkpot, or a fountain-pen, or, at least, a pencil. But letters should never be written in pencil, nor in coloured ink, either. If you have a type-writer, you can type it. Business letters are all typed nowadays, and so are many private letters.
When you have got all the things that you require for writing your letter, you sit down at your desk, you take your pad of note-paper out of the drawer, and begin to write. Do not forget to put the date - day, month, year - in the top right-hand corner of the sheet on which you are writing. Put also your address above or under the date, if it is not already printed on your note-paper. It will save your correspondent a lot of trouble, when he (or, she) answers your letter.
When you have said all that you wanted to tell your correspondent, your letter is finished. You sign it, that is, you write your name and surname at the end of it, you fold it, then you take an envelope, put your letter into it, and close it (or, seal it). Having closed the envelope, you write on it the name and address of the person to whom you are sending the letter, then you stick the stamp on the top right-hand corner. You can post your letter now: you drop it into a letter-box, or a pillar-box.
From letter-boxes and pillar-boxes, letter are collected several times a day and taken to the General Post Office, where they are sorted and sent to their destinations. There, they will be delivered to their addressees, who will receive, open, read and answer them. The delivery of the letters in made by the postman.
By the way, I forgot to tell you that stamps are not sold at the tobacconists' in England, as they are in Italy. If you want to buy stamps, you must go to the Post Office and get them there, either at the counter for stamps, or from a slot machine.
